Perfume Smells Like Alcohol

Perfume smells like alcohol when it is sprayed too close, worn before the opening evaporates, or stored poorly. Let it air out and test whether the scent recovers.

The fix

Save
  1. spray from farther away and wait 2 minutes before smelling the spot
  2. test one spray on paper to see if the alcohol note fades
  3. apply unscented lotion first if alcohol feels sharp on dry skin

If it’s still not right

  • Stop using the bottle if it still smells alcoholic on paper after several minutes.
  • Check whether heat or sunlight changed the fragrance.

Prevent it next time

  • Store perfume in a cool, dark place.
  • Do not rub wrists together after spraying.

Notes

Why this works

Most perfumes need a short dry-down before the actual scent is clear. Giving the alcohol time to evaporate separates a normal opening from a spoiled bottle.

Testing on paper removes skin chemistry from the equation.
