Perfume Smells Too Strong
Perfume smells too strong when too much lands on warm skin or fabric traps the scent. Blot, dilute with unscented lotion, and move the fragrance farther from your face.

What you'll need
- tissue
- unscented lotion
- mild soap
- cotton pad
Why it happened
Fragrance projects more strongly from warm skin, especially near the neck and chest where you smell it constantly. Blotting removes excess oil and alcohol before it settles, while washing reduces the concentration on skin. Unscented lotion softens the remaining scent without creating a clashing mix.
The fix
- 1blot the sprayed area with tissue without rubbing it around
- 2wash the strongest spot with mild soap and cool water if it is on skin
- 3apply unscented lotion over the area to dilute what remains
- 4if perfume is on clothing, air the garment out instead of adding another scent over it
If it's still wrong
- Change the sprayed shirt if the fragrance is trapped in fabric.
- Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad only for a small skin spot, then moisturize.
Prevent next time
- Spray once behind the knees, lower back, or inner elbows instead of the neck.
- Spray into the air and walk through the mist for very strong perfumes.
Notes
Why this works
Too much fragrance is a concentration problem. The closer it is to your nose and the warmer the skin, the more intense it feels. Trying to cover it with another scent usually makes the cloud bigger and more complicated.
Removing and diluting are more reliable. Blotting takes away excess fragrance, washing reduces what is on the skin, and unscented lotion softens the edges of what remains.
Substitutions
- unscented lotion→plain body oil or fragrance-free hand cream
- mild soap→micellar water on a cotton pad
