Self-Tanner Patchy on Hands

Self-tanner looks patchy on hands because knuckles, palms, and dry cuticles grab extra color. Diluting the tan and buffing edges makes it look even.

The fix

Save
  1. moisturize knuckles, cuticles, wrists, and between fingers 5 minutes before tanning
  2. use only the leftover self-tanner on your mitt after applying arms
  3. glide over the backs of hands once, keeping palms mostly clean
  4. wipe palms, nails, and between fingers with a damp washcloth
  5. blend wrist edges with a cotton swab if color has gathered there

If it’s still not right

  • Buff dark patches with a damp washcloth and a small amount of gentle body wash.
  • Apply gradual tanner to hands instead of full-strength mousse or foam.

Prevent it next time

  • Patch test new self-tanner before using it on visible areas.
  • Tan hands last with the smallest amount of product.

Notes

Why this works

Self-tanner darkens where more product sits, and hands have more creases and dry edges than most body areas. Knuckles and cuticles can grab extra color while palms stain easily.

Moisturizer creates a softer landing zone, so the tan does not attach as strongly to dry spots. Using only leftover product keeps the color sheer enough to blend.
