Gel Polish Lifting at Tips
Gel polish lifts at the tips when the free edge is not sealed or the nail surface has oil on it. Clean the nail, cap the edge, and keep layers thin.
Part of nails beauty fixes and chipping beauty fixes .

What you'll need
- alcohol wipe
- nail file
- gel base coat
- gel top coat
Why it happened
The nail tip takes the most impact from typing, washing, and opening things. If gel does not wrap over the free edge, water and friction can get under the coating and lift it. Thin layers cure more evenly and flex better than thick layers, which helps the seal last.
The fix
- 1lightly file the lifted edge smooth without peeling the gel back
- 2wipe the nail with alcohol and let it dry fully
- 3apply a thin layer of base or color over the tip and cap the free edge
- 4seal with top coat, capping the edge again, then cure according to the lamp instructions
If it's still wrong
- Remove and redo the nail if lifting reaches the middle of the nail plate.
- Do not glue down lifted gel, because trapped moisture can irritate the nail.
Prevent next time
- Dehydrate the nail plate before base coat.
- Cap the free edge with every layer, including top coat.
Notes
Why this works
Gel polish needs a sealed edge. When the coating stops on the top of the nail instead of wrapping over the tip, daily friction can lift the edge like a sticker. Once that edge opens, water makes the lifting spread.
Thin coats are easier for the lamp to cure fully. A thick blob at the tip may feel protective, but it can cure unevenly and peel faster than a thin, wrapped seal.
Substitutions
- alcohol wipe→lint-free pad with isopropyl alcohol
- gel top coat→regular top coat only for a temporary non-gel patch
