What you'll need
- lip balm
- tissue
- waxy lip liner
- satin or matte lipstick
Why it happened
Fine lines around the mouth give creamy lipstick small channels to travel through. A waxy liner creates a boundary and a base layer, while blotting removes extra slip from the lipstick. Keeping gloss away from the edge prevents the border from becoming too fluid.
The fix
- 1apply lip balm, wait a minute, then blot until the lips are not slippery
- 2trace the lip edge with a waxy liner and fill in the whole lip lightly
- 3apply lipstick in a thin layer and blot with tissue
- 4add gloss only to the center of the lips, not the edges
If it's still wrong
- Dust a tiny amount of translucent powder around the outside of the lips.
- Switch to a satin or soft matte formula if balmy lipstick keeps moving.
Prevent next time
- Avoid over-applying lip balm right before lipstick.

Filling in the whole lip with liner also gives the lipstick something drier and waxier to grip, so the color wears down more evenly instead of sliding toward the edge.
The timing of balm matters. Lips need comfort, but a fresh slippery layer under lipstick can break down the border before you leave the house. Letting balm absorb and then blotting keeps the lips flexible without leaving oil on the surface. Gloss is the most mobile layer, so keeping it in the center preserves shine while leaving the outer edge stable. If bleeding continues, a softer matte or satin formula usually behaves better than a balmy bullet.
