Nail Polish Keeps Chipping
Polish chips early when it is not sealed to a clean, dry nail. Prepping the surface, wrapping the tips, and using a fresh top coat makes a manicure last days longer.
Part of nails beauty fixes and chipping beauty fixes .

What you'll need
- base coat
- quick-dry top coat
- rubbing alcohol or nail prep
- cotton pad
Why it happened
Polish needs a clean, dry, oil-free surface to bond to. Natural oils, lotion, or moisture left on the nail create a barrier that keeps polish from adhering, so it lifts and chips. Chips usually start at the tip, the most exposed edge, which is why sealing the free edge and refreshing the top coat are what actually extend wear.
The fix
- 1wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad to remove oil and moisture before painting
- 2paint thin coats and run the brush along the free edge of the nail to wrap and seal the tip
- 3finish with a fresh quick-dry top coat, capping the tip again, and reapply top coat every two days
If it's still wrong
- Use a ridge-filling or stronger adhesion base coat if polish still lifts at the cuticle.
- File the free edge smooth before painting so there is no rough spot for chips to start.
Prevent next time
- Always wipe nails with alcohol right before polishing and avoid lotion on the nails beforehand.
- Cap the tip of every coat, including base and top, to seal the most vulnerable edge.
Notes
Why this works
A manicure fails at the bond between polish and nail. The nail plate naturally carries oils and moisture, and anything left on the surface, including hand cream or the residue from a buffing step, prevents the base coat from gripping. Wiping with alcohol dehydrates and degreases the plate so the polish can actually adhere.
The other half of longevity is the free edge at the tip of the nail. It takes the most abuse and is where water and friction sneak under the polish to start a chip. Wrapping each coat over that edge, called capping the tip, seals the polish into a continuous shell. Refreshing the top coat every couple of days renews that seal and the glossy protective layer, which is the single most effective habit for making polish last.
Substitutions
- rubbing alcohol→a swipe of plain non-acetone remover on a clean pad
- quick-dry top coat→any clear top coat, given extra drying time
