Brittle Nails with Ridges
Brittle ridged nails look smoother when they are hydrated, protected, and lightly filled instead of over-buffed. Use oil, ridge-filling base, and gentle filing.
Part of mature beauty fixes and damage beauty fixes .

What you'll need
- glass nail file
- cuticle oil
- ridge-filling base coat
- hand cream
Why it happened
Nails often become drier and more ridged with age, repeated polish removal, water exposure, or general wear. Buffing ridges can make the nail thinner and more fragile. Oil and cream improve flexibility, while ridge-filling base coat smooths the look without removing nail layers.
The fix
- 1file nails in one direction with a glass file to remove snags
- 2apply cuticle oil over the nail plate and around the cuticle
- 3use ridge-filling base coat instead of buffing ridges flat
- 4apply hand cream after washing and before bed
If it's still wrong
- Keep nails short until peeling or splitting improves.
- Ask a clinician about sudden nail changes, pain, or dark streaks.
Prevent next time
- Wear gloves for cleaning and dishwashing.
- Use acetone remover less often or follow it immediately with oil and cream.
Notes
Why this works
Ridges are common, but aggressive smoothing can backfire. Buffing removes nail plate thickness, and thinner nails split more easily. A filler gives the eye a smoother surface without weakening the nail.
Hydration helps brittle nails bend instead of snapping. Oil and cream do not erase ridges, but they make the nail less dry and easier to protect while it grows.
Substitutions
- cuticle oil→jojoba oil or a rich hand cream
- ridge-filling base coat→sheer strengthening base coat with a flexible finish
