How to Plop Hair
Hair plopping helps curls dry with less frizz by holding wet curls in a soft towel or T-shirt. Use enough leave-in, avoid rough fabric, and do not leave hair wrapped too long.
Part of hair beauty fixes and dull beauty fixes .

What you'll need
- microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt
- leave-in conditioner
- curl gel or mousse
- wide-tooth comb
Why it happened
Plopping keeps wet curls compressed in their natural pattern while excess water transfers into soft fabric. That reduces dripping and friction, two things that often stretch curls or create frizz. Leaving it too long can flatten roots or make the scalp feel damp.
The fix
- 1apply leave-in and curl product to very wet hair before wrapping
- 2lower curls into the center of a microfiber towel or T-shirt so they stack upward
- 3tie the fabric snugly but not tight, then leave it for 10 to 20 minutes
- 4release gently and air dry or diffuse without touching the curls too much
If it's still wrong
- Use less cream and more lightweight mousse if curls come out flat.
- Diffuse the roots after plopping if the top stays damp.
Prevent next time
- Avoid terry towels, which rough up the cuticle.
- Do not twist the hair inside the towel like a standard towel wrap.
Notes
Why this works
Curls are most fragile while wet. Rough towel drying pulls curl groups apart, and the weight of dripping water can stretch the pattern before it sets. Plopping supports the curls upward so they dry with more spring.
The fabric matters because the goal is absorbency without friction. A T-shirt or microfiber towel removes excess water while keeping the curl clumps intact. Product needs to go in before plopping because the wrap helps press it evenly through the hair.
