Mascara Smudges Under Eyes

Mascara smudges under the eyes when oil, concealer, or lower lashes break down the formula. Set the under-eye, switch placement, and use tubing mascara if needed.

The fix

Save
  1. blot under the eyes after concealer so the area is not tacky
  2. set only the lower lash line area with a tiny amount of translucent powder
  3. apply mascara mainly at the upper lash roots and avoid heavy lower-lash coats
  4. switch to tubing mascara if regular waterproof mascara still transfers

If it’s still not right

  • Skip mascara on the lower lashes and define them with powder shadow instead.
  • Use less eye cream in the morning if the smudging starts within an hour.

Prevent it next time

  • Keep rich skincare away from the lower lash line before makeup.
  • Curl lashes so the tips sit farther from the under-eye area.

Notes

Why this works

Under-eye smudging is usually caused by contact plus oil. Each blink can press mascara against concealer or skin, and the oils in that area slowly break the formula down. The result is a gray shadow or little black marks under the eye.

Setting the area gives mascara a drier surface to touch, while changing where you apply it reduces contact. Tubing formulas help because they come off in pieces with warm water but resist smearing during normal wear.
